Friends of Grove Street Park
Friends of Grove Street Park is a group of neighbors who are committed to the care, maintenance, and modernization of Grove Street Park and its play structures. We’re also very interested in bringing the community together for more family-oriented arts, music, and cultural events in GSP and Great Barrington.
Aware that that town already had plans to improve GSP, we began to document play structures that might be of interest to the parks department. We believe there is an amazing opportunity to create a deeply enriching environment for children here.
We believe there are a lot of incredible possibilities that could be added, especially for younger children who are not quite ready to utilize most of the structures that Giggle Park has to offer.
As Great Barrington welcomes more young families, we want to make sure there is an abundance of attractive and safe options especially for young and pre-school-aged children in our neighborhood. Additionally, we want to support Great Barrington’s already thriving cultural landscape with family friendly arts and music programming that inspires, uplifts, and builds community.
We plan to launch these visions with our first event, “Jerry Day” celebrating the music of Jerry Garcia. Jerry Garcia was born in August, and events honoring his legacy are held throughout America. His music is as relevant today as it ever was, and is enjoyed by entire families, being passed from generation to generation.
We envision this day centering around musical performances, and including vending in the parking lot, tables for community organizations, and perhaps even a tie dye station.
Vendors will help defray the costs, and we have plans to create sponsorship packages and to apply for grants as well. It should be noted that Friends of GSP is a totally volunteer based organization and has no profit motive. After operational costs of the event are covered, plans are to donate the majority of the funds to the parks department, while keeping a small reserve for future events and projects.
